Urban: Bondi Junction Town Square

In 2002, JAA were commissioned by Waverley Council to design a new town square for Bondi Junction. The square is situated in the centre of Bondi Junction at the crossing of major north-south and east-west pedestrian routes and directly connected to Oxford Street Mall, Bondi Junction's main shopping street. It is positioned strategically to take advantage of the northern sun and wind protected location. The vision for the square is for a flexible, multi-use space, inspired by the Italian piazza, which would be suitable for civic functions, markets and entertainment. Enclosing the square is a 4-5 storey development with a double-height perimeter colonnade providing all-weather access to the ground floor retail and food & beverage outlets, which would spill out onto the square during summer months. Residential and hotel accommodation, situated above, provide passive security and bring life and vitality to the square throughout the course of the day.
