In 2003, JAA were commissioned by Waverley Council to undertake an urban design master plan study of Bondi Junction town centre. The purpose of this was to investigate ways 'to restore Bondi Junction's former vitality and importance as a busy town centre with a pleasurable urban environment, a civic focus, and a good range of accessible services and facilities.' The proposal focuses around a strategically located town square, designed to bring day and night activity to the centre, as well as acting as a synergistic counter-balance destination to the new Westfield development. This square becomes a meeting place and venue for markets, civic functions, ceremonies, celebrations, live entertainment and art displays. The proposed built form has been designed to promote a 'green' urban environment, including consideration of solar access to public open space, wind protection, maximising views and promoting energy efficiency.
