Apartments: 'Future Apartment'

This prototype 'future apartment' was commissioned by the Fin Review in 2001. Interlocking units are shown pre-fabricated layers of construction - base shell, glazed wall and sliding timber panels. The inner shell would then support a variety of internal configurations through panelised partitioning and prefabricated beam supports for adjusting the mezzanine level. Individual unit shells can be grouped by offset layering, allowing light into the garden areas. The garden in the middle of each apartment becomes a personal oasis in the city. Supporting structural elements make soft landscaping possible with the potential for grasses and mid-sized trees to grow under the 5m high glazed roof. Grey water recycling and rainwater collection systems would provide the water for inbuilt sprinkler systems and the operable glass roof louvers allow air, natural light and precipitation. This relaxing environment would be accessible from every area in the apartment as sliding glass paneled walls on each side of the garden open the interior to create one free flowing space.
